Heathcoat Fabrics Showcase Aerospace Textile Expertise at International AIAA Conference

Heathcoat Fabrics was honoured to host the concluding Advanced Materials Workshop of the 28th AIAA Aerodynamic Decelerator Systems Conference and Seminar, welcoming many of the world’s foremost aerospace organisations to its Tiverton manufacturing facility.

Held in the UK between 1–5 June, the prestigious conference brought together leading experts in parachute systems, aerodynamic decelerators and spacecraft recovery technologies. The event provided a unique opportunity for engineers, researchers and material specialists to exchange knowledge and explore the latest advances shaping the future of aerospace.

As a globally recognised manufacturer of high-performance technical textiles for parachute and space applications, Heathcoat Fabrics played a significant role throughout the conference. Peter Hill, Nick Oakes and Lotte De Leeuw represented the company during the technical sessions in London before welcoming delegates to Devon for the conference’s final workshop.

The Heathcoat programme combined technical presentations with behind-the-scenes factory tours, giving delegates a rare insight into the specialist manufacturing processes behind the advanced woven fabrics used in some of the world’s most demanding aerospace applications.

Representatives from organisations including NASA, SpaceX, Blue Origin, Airborne Systems, JAXA, the UK Ministry of Defence, the US Department of Defense, the Royal Aeronautical Society and several leading universities attended the workshop, alongside parachute engineers, textile scientists and aerospace researchers from across Europe and North America.

The afternoon technical programme explored topics including parachute textile permeability, seam performance, material characterisation for planetary entry systems and the latest developments in spacecraft parachute materials, reinforcing the importance of close collaboration between textile manufacturers and system designers.

Feedback from delegates was overwhelmingly positive.

Rob Sinclair, Senior Technical Fellow for Aerodynamic Decelerator Technologies at Blue Origin and former Chief Engineer at Airborne Systems, described Heathcoat Fabrics as “the absolute gold standard”, adding that many attendees left with “a whole new understanding of the manufacturing process.”

Rick Boardman of the UK Ministry of Defence praised the event as “the icing on the cake” of the conference week, recognising both the technical value of the workshop and the considerable preparation undertaken by the Heathcoat team.

Hosting the workshop reinforced Heathcoat Fabrics’ reputation as a trusted partner to the global aerospace sector. By opening its doors to many of the industry’s leading organisations, the company demonstrated not only its advanced manufacturing capabilities but also its ongoing commitment to innovation, technical collaboration and the development of next-generation parachute and spacecraft recovery systems.
