Composites used in aerospace and aircraft applications

Formulation of adhesive bonds

A key failure mode of textile-based composite products is delamination between the resin & textile. At Heathcoat Fabrics Ltd we can formulate adhesion promoters designed to meet specific customers needs in which we are trusted throughout the industry. The adhesion promoters are 100% solvent free systems utilising aqueous technology, with lower environmental impact.

We produce an advanced range of bespoke solutions in both thermoplastic & heat-stable polymers for the composite market in areas such as Aerospace, Automotive and Military.

Warp-knitted and woven textiles

Polymer Composite

Active around the globe in a range of end uses, our fabrics can also be used for textile-reinforced polymer composites. Our warp knitted and woven textiles can offer sustainable solutions in various ways, such as cellulosic biodegradable options or yarn made from recycled polymer. Often our super lightweight textiles are used as resin carrier and flow mesh, or lightweight integral solutions.

We weave and knit using many polymers, including meta-aramids, para-aramids, nylon and polyester, that can be used in specialist applications. One of our new and exciting additions focuses on textiles using Polyetherimide (PEI).

PEI 3D Spacer Fabric

PEI - Polyetherimide

Polyetherimide (PEI) is a specialist polymer with specific properties:

  • Heat Resistant polymer that can be extruded, but neither melts or drips when exposed to flame (FR).
  • Various constructions have been developed, including utilising it in the World’s first monofilament to produce knitted 3D spacers.
  • Other properties include high modulus, high chemical resistance, high dimensional stability (water & heat), high infrared transparency & low smoke toxicity.

Certifications:

  • EN 14116 limited flame spread INDEX 1
  • FM VSS 302
  • Can be designed to pass FAR 25.853(a)

Textile benefits:

  • Abrasion resistance – exceptionally durable in high-contact areas
  • Corrosion resistance – ideal for harsh weather conditions where there is a likelihood of corrosion via rusting
  • Flexibility – can easily be bent and moved to fit into cramped spaces such as door seals
  • Strength – durable textiles that can resist piercing
  • Low density – makes it an incredibly lightweight material, allowing for easy installation

Textile & process capabilities:

  • Solvent-free fabric treatments provide the best possible adhesion performance whilst being environmentally friendly
  • Knitted and woven fabric structures
  • Fabrics made from Polyamides, Polyesters and other high-performance yarns
  • Superior fire and heat resistant performance
  • Fabrics can be primed to enhance adhesion
  • On site R&D and product design
