What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a paid job where the employee learns whilst they earn. During an apprenticeship, employees will spend at least 20% of their working hours completing classroom-based learning with a college, university or external training provider which leads to a nationally recognised qualification.

An apprentice has 20% of their paid time to complete ‘off-the-job’ activities which includes:

  • Teaching theory (e.g. classroom lessons, lectures and online learning)
  • Practical training (e.g. shadowing, mentoring)
  • Learning support and time to write assignments (including study time)

Filling the skills gap with apprenticeship opporunities

Rhys - Engineering Apprentice

“Since joining Heathcoat Fabrics I have been surprised at the amount of different jobs that I have been able to get involved in mechanically and electronically.

The course that I have been doing at college has really been benefited by the apprenticeship as I have learnt a lot at Heathcoat’s while being here”

What our employees think?

Simon - Engineering Manager

“2023 was the year for Heathcoat Fabrics to re-introduce Apprentices to our business.
With an ongoing skills gap and experience in the marketplace for quality multi-skilled engineers, the obvious choice was to invest in Apprenticeships specifically within the Engineering Department.

As a business, we are in the fortunate position of employing a variety of long served skilled engineers who are keen to pass on their valuable knowledge and experience in mechanical and electrical engineering, including welding and fabrication”

Jayne - HR Manager

‘By bringing in new talent to our organisation or developing our current employees to bridge their skills gaps, Apprenticeships create passion and willingness for employees to learn new skills for their success.

Apprenticeships allow our employees to dedicate their time at work to focus on transformational projects and industry related opportunities to support their own commitment to learning. It is important for us to build our talent for the future by providing the relevant training and development at all levels’
